UK Soldier Dies After Being Injured In 2012

A soldier has died in hospital in Birmingham after being shot in the hip while on patrol in Afghanistan three years ago.

Lance Corporal Michael Campbell, from 3 Royal Welsh, died on Thursday following an operation to treat injuries he sustained in April 2012.

The 32-year-old was struck by a single round while crossing a road, having been confronted by "accurate, heavy and sustained enemy fire".

He fought on despite his wounds so that his comrades could cross an open and exposed area to get into better cover, the Ministry of Defence said.

Tributes were paid to the "true Welsh Warrior" who was a "loyal friend" and "dedicated" soldier.

"LCpl Campbell epitomised everything a Reservist in 3 R WELSH should be; dedicated, professional and willing to volunteer on operations wherever he was required; a true Welsh Warrior," the MoD said.

He leaves behind his wife Chrissie Campbell and four stepchildren.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: "The tributes of his comrades describe LCpl Michael Campbell as a popular and committed soldier devoted to his Regiment and a dedicated family man.

"Proud and professional, he epitomised the ethos of the Army Reservist and he had completed numerous tours duty in Afghanistan and Iraq."

Lieutenant Colonel (retired) S Webb described him as an "outstanding soldier" and a "very talented junior commander".

He said: "Skilful, determined, measured and very courageous: he set an excellent example to those around him."

Lieutenant Colonel R Manuel JP said: "A larger than life character always upbeat, at the heart of things and looking for the next challenge."
