EU Referendum: Moment A Sombre David Cameron Resigned After Britain Backed Brexit

His voice crackling with emotion, David Cameron announced on Friday morning he will step down as Prime Minister.

He had just taken the biggest political gamble of his career - calling a referendum on the Uk’s membership of the European Union - and lost.

And standing outside 10 Downing Street just hours after the official result, and flanked by his wife Samantha, Mr Cameron announced his days as PM were drawing to a close.

Six years after first being elected as PM, Mr Cameron said he was quitting.

He told the country that ‘fresh leadership’ was now required following the vote which saw 52% of Britons backed separating from Brussels.

‘I think the country requires fresh leadership,’ said Cameron.

‘I will do everything I can as prime minister, to steady the ship in the weeks ahead, but I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to the next destination.

‘This is not a decision I have taken lightly but I do think it is in the national interests to have a period of stability and then the new leadership required.’

Gasps were heard among the waiting world’s press as he announced his decision to step down.

Prior to his announcement, there had been frenzied speculation among the waiting press about what exactly Mr Cameron would do in response to the vote.

A correspondent for French broadcaster iTele repeatedly told her viewers that Mr Cameron was “fini”.

British reporters monitored the opening of the FTSE, as it crashed spectacularly in response to the result.

Overhead, TV helicopters hovered over Westminster while two Union Flags hung limply over the roofs of 10 and 11 Downing Street.

For hours the press waited, fuelled by chocolate, biscuits and frequent coffee runs.

There was a moment of excitement when the famous black door of No. 10 opened, only for Larry, the Camerons’ pet cat to emerge.

Looking at the vast number of media assembled, Larry quickly returned to the safety of inside.

It had been expected that Mr Cameron would respond to the result before 8am - when the stock markets opened.Instead, it was around 20 minutes later when Mr and Mrs Cameron walked into the street.

In a short, but historically important address, Mr Cameron declared that he would not be able to remain as the country’s leader.
