Sony's Marvel show “Silk: Spider Society” scrapped at Amazon

Announced in 2022, the series would have centered on Korean American web-slinger Cindy Moon.

Don't expect to see Cindy Moon on screen any time soon.

Silk: Spider Society, the planned live-action TV series about Marvel superhero Cindy Moon, has been scrapped at Amazon, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed. Announced back in 2022, Silk was to be the first of several live-action Marvel series produced by Sony Pictures Television. The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang was originally attached to develop the show.

According to multiple trade reports, Sony will try to shop the series around to find another distributor.

Sony controls the rights to more than 900 Marvel Comics characters, mostly those with ties to Spider-Man, and in November 2022 the company announced plans to launch a "suite of live-action television series" based on said characters. Silk was intended to be the first such show, focusing on Korean American superhero Cindy Moon. In the comics, Moon develops superpowers after she's bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker, and the show was supposed to follow her as she "escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk."

At the time, Kang was attached to develop the series with Amy Pascal and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Over the years, Sony has attempted to develop several different projects about Silk: Back in 2018, there were rumors of a Cindy Moon film, and she was later expected to appear in an animated, female-led Spider-Verse spinoff.

Earlier this year, the Ankler reported that the Silk: Spider Society writers' room had been put on pause, retaining Kang as showrunner but releasing the writing staff to pursue other work. According to the Ankler, Amazon wanted to refocus the show "with a more male-skewing audience in mind," given the streamer's success with series like The Boys and its spinoff Gen V.

The Silk news comes just a few days after Amazon confirmed plans for a different Marvel show: Nicolas Cage has been confirmed to star in a live-action Spider-Man Noir series, after voicing the character in the animated Spider-Verse films. The show will follow Cage's black-and-white hero as he works as a private investigator in 1930s New York, grappling with his status as the city's only superhero. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will serve as showrunners, after developing the series with Pascal, Lord, and Miller. The series will debut domestically on MGM+ and globally on Prime Video.
