South Africa vs. England: Where to Watch, Preview, Weather and Selection News

Eoin Morgan and A.B. De Villiers will contest the one-day series

England come into the five-match one-day international series in buoyant mood, having beaten South Africa in a Test series away from home for the first time since 2004-05.

But South Africa is proud and will view this series—five matches in 11 days—as an opportunity to even the score. England looked lackadaisical in Centurion in the final Test, losing by 280 runs as A.B. De Villiers stepped in as South Africa captain for Hashim Amla, who has resigned the position.

De Villiers’s phenomenal workload also includes his job as South Africa one-day captain. For his side to have a chance in the series, the world’s best 50-over batsman must fire, fire often, and fire big. No pressure. He will have help from Amla, but this is all about De Villiers, as it has been so often for South Africa since the great Jacques Kallis retired. Kagiso Rabada found career lift-off during the Test series, with 13 wickets in Centurion, and should again shoulder most of the wicket-taking burden.

And England? Jason Roy and Alex Hales at the top of the batting order has often promised something delicious but ended in an unsatisfactory meal. Roy is improving by the game; Hales, following a fairly dire Test series, needs runs, especially with the ICC World Twenty20 in India approaching in March. Roy may struggle to play on Wednesday as he has a back spasm. The idea has been floated that captain Eoin Morgan could open in his place—a move that would fit in with England’s new, carefree approach to limited-overs cricket.

England’s 3-1 victory in the one-day series against Pakistan in November 2015 was momentous. Victory in South Africa, doubling up on the Test series win, would be even more praiseworthy.
