South Korean president praises Donald Trump as talks with the North resume

The President of South Korea has credited Donald Trump with responsibility for the reopening of talks with the North, following the first meeting between the countries in more than two years.

On Tuesday, officials from South and North Korea met in the border village of Panmunjom for rare governmental discussions between the rival nations.

The North reportedly agreed to future talks with the South, including a continued dialogue between their militaries, to ease tensions and improve ties.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has claimed that he owes a debt of gratitude to Donald Trump for his role in negotiations.

‘I am giving a lot of credit to President Trump’,  Mr. Moon said at a nationally televised news conference.

‘I am expressing my gratitude.’

The agreements have been widely hailed as a welcome relief for South Koreans, after a year of progressively mounting tensions over the North’s nuclear and long-range missile programs.

Last week, Trump hailed the talks as a ‘good thing’, and claimed that his willingness to remain ‘firm’ and ‘strong had been responsible for the talks materialising in the first place.

‘With all of the failed “experts” weighing in, does anybody really believe that talks and dialogue would be going on between North and South Korea right now if I wasn’t firm, strong and willing to commit our total “might” against the North. Fools, but talks are a good thing’, he wrote on Twitter.
