Southampton's commitment to equality and diversity was celebrated at a recent event.

The 'SO:Inclusive' gathering took place at the University of Southampton's John Hansard Gallery on June 10, delivered by independent charity Southampton Forward and the university itself.

The event served as the grand finale of a six-month programme where delegates from the city's public, voluntary, business, and charitable sectors assembled to engineer strategies to build an inclusive city that Southampton aspires to be.

Throughout the programme, the participants deepened their understandings of equity, diversity, and inclusion, shaping a set of priorities.

Top of the agenda at the round-table discussions was an inclusive charter to provide guidelines on recruitment and inclusive messaging.

Participants also touched on language issues and how to capitalise on the city’s diverse communities' expertise.

Young people will also play their part in developing a statement of inclusion.

Joining the charter will embody an organisation's pledge to build on equity, inclusion, and diversity through its in-house structures and outreach.

The programme, SO:inclusive, is only the start of a network of organisations joining forces to share ideas and best practice.

Southampton Forward's CEO, Claire Whitaker, said: "We have been delighted by everyone’s support and commitment to focus firmly on diversity, equity and inclusion and empowering the young leaders of tomorrow.

"The energy and time given to this programme by all involved has been invaluable, despite the limited resources and many pulls on people’s availability."

Amanda Parker, a cultural business strategist instrumental in the event, said: "When Claire Whitaker invited me to help Southampton Forward and its partner organisations to build on the work started in 2021 and help them to collectively take their next steps to building an inclusive city, I was motivated.

"It has been fantastic to have representation in the group from the council, from Southampton Football Club, and a collection of incredible expertise drawn from a range of cultural and social enterprises."

Those driven to making Southampton a symbol of inclusivity and want to be part of the ongoing journey are encouraged to connect with Southampton Forward.

A meeting is also on the cards in the upcoming months to carry on discussions about the Citywide charter.
