Southport's Promenade to undergo huge £73m transformation as demolition set to begin

The Promenade is about to look very different as preparations are underway to demolish Southport Theatre in the next few days days.

Sefton Council has today confirmed an agreement with specialist contractors, DSM Group to carry out the demolition of the former waterfront Convention Centre. It means works to start developing the hugely anticipated Marine Lake Events Centre (MLEC) have taken a significant step forward.

The update follows on from preparatory works which involved the creation of a bespoke bird raft for any disturbed wildlife and the diversion of underground pipework away from site.

Sefton Council has already announced the securing of ASM Global who will manage the £73 million venue on the resort’s promenade - joining the the events centre to their network of 350 venues around the world including the AO Arena in Manchester.

With vital demolition work on the horizon, Labour leader of Sefton Council, Marion Atkinson said: "This is another example of our commitment to Southport.

"As with the Pier we have been consistently working behind the scenes to get us in a good position to start work. I am delighted that these important next steps are happening for both the MLEC but more importantly for residents, visitors and local businesses who are fully behind us.”

Ahead of the demolition a number of culturally important items have been salvaged from the former theatre building, including historic projectors which will be persevered and put on display inside the new Marine Lake Events Centre.

Managing Director of the DSM Group, Andrew Fletcher said he is eager to work with nearby residents and businesses. He said: “We have been able to work closely with Sefton Council and they were impressed with our plans and suggestions to mitigate any disruption to the community, which is a clear priority for the Council.

“This appointment reaffirms our position as a trusted partner in delivering exceptional solutions and underscores the dedication of our team to exceed expectations. We look forward to getting started and being part of the creation of the Marine Lake Events Centre .”

DSM will contact residents prior to the main demolition works commencing to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum, with ongoing communications and engagement throughout the works.

Sefton Council has also started a procurement process to identify a main contractor for the construction of the new venue and further updates about this will be announced in due course.

Chief Executive of Sefton Council, Phil Porter said: “Residents and passers-by won’t see an awful lot yet as preparatory work is taking place inside the building and we expect external demolition works to start in early Summer.”
