Marbella holidaymakers who take a wee in the sea could be slapped with a €750 (£634) fine under a proposed measure.

Situated on the Costa del Sol, visitors flock to the Spanish hotspot to sunbathe on its miles of beach front and swim in the Mediterranean. However, in an effort to reduce the damage caused by high tourist numbers, Marbella's city council recently passed new plans.

The crackdown on errant bathers is part of a new ordinance about the use and enjoyment of Marbella's beaches. The new rule, as reports Olive Press, was initially passed in a council session earlier this month on Friday June 21.

The publication says the proposal will require public display and consultation before becoming official. However, the offence for peeing in the sea is not new.

Olive Press reports the rule has been in effect since 2004, but the fine was less than half of the new proposal - €300. The legislation does not make clear how people will be caught out in the act.

The publication adds that the draft ordinance also bans playing ball and paddle games in the water where other beach goers may be disturbed. Dog owners are also targeted in the plans - the new measure also restrict dogs in the water and keeping pooches restricted to dog-friendly beaches.

It will still be permitted to smoke on the beach in Marbella, but taking a puff on Beniform's sands could get you fined €2,000 (£1,700). Visitors to Benidorm can be fined €1,200 (£1,025) for going to the beach between midnight and 7am.
