A full eight months after Special Ops: Lioness wrapped its first season in explosive fashion, TVLine has learned that the espionage thriller will be back for Season 2 — minus the Special Ops in its title.

Hailing from the prolific Taylor Sheridan, Lioness Season 2 will bring back star and executive producer Zoë Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira (who played Season 1’s titular operative, Marine Raider Cruz Mañuelos), Michael Kelly, executive producer Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman (who has been upped to series regular as Secretary of State Edwin Mullins).

Inspired by an actual U.S. Military program, Lioness follows CIA station chief Joe McNamara (Saldaña) as she attempts to balance her personal and professional life as the tip of the CIA’s spear in the war on terror. The series also stars Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton and Hannah Love Lanier.

At the time of its July 2023 debut, Lioness, says Paramount+, set a new record as the streamer’s most-watched worldwide series premiere, with nearly six million total viewers in its first week (across Paramount+ globally and a linear preview on the Paramount Network).

“Our Paramount+ audience resoundingly has joined forces in support of Lioness’ gripping, global story and the powerhouse performances from Zoë Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira and Nicole Kidman,” Paramount+ programming EVP Jeff Grossman said in a statement. “We cannot wait to see more of the heart-stopping suspense and action that Taylor Sheridan and the incredibly talented team deliver in its second season.”

Lioness is executive produced by Sheridan, Saldaña, Kidman, Wagner, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, David Lemanowicz, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Friedman and Keith Cox.
