Former Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom is emerging as a front-runner to be Plymouth Argyle’s next boss. Speculation is mounting that the Pilgrims are close to appointing the 46-year-old who was sacked by the Blades last December.

Heckingbottom was last week ranked by bookies Bet Victor at 5/1 to take over at Home Park, once ex-Hull City boss Liam Rosenior ruled himself out of the running. But PlymouthLive reported an appointment was not close to being made.

However, Daily Telegraph football reporter John Percy set tongues wagging when he posed last night on social media that Argyle was close to naming a new head coach. He said Heckingbottom was expected to be interviewed for the vacancy, but did say “several options” were under consideration.

Last week, PlymouthLive reported that Chesterfield boss Paul Cook was also a candidate, with Bet Victor making him a 4/1 bet. The Greens have been wary of rushing into a decision after the appointment of Ian Foster flopped and he was given his marching orders after just three months.

Director of football Neil Dewsnip and first team coach Kevin Nancekivell took temporary charge and guided Argyle to safety with a last-day win over Hull City.

Heckingbottom is an experienced coach, having been manager at Barnsley, Leeds United, and Hibernian, in Scotland, in addition to Sheffield United. As a player, the Yorkshireman turned out for 10 clubs, making 105 appearances as a defender for Darlington, and had spells at Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday, and Barnsley.
