Spencer Matthews apologises after 'wooden' Good Morning Britain debut

The first day in any new job is tough, but Spencer Matthews had a baptism of fire when he debuted as an entertainment reporter for Good Morning Britain on Monday (February 18).

Best known for his starring role in posh reality show Made in Chelsea, Matthews branched out into a different career when he appeared as the ITV breakfast show’s latest showbiz reporter.

However, it seems nerves got the better of the dad-of-one, as so many viewers complained about his wooden style that he ended up apologising for his cringeworthy debut.

Matthews wrote: “Such a huge amount of respect for people who regularly present live television – it’s a skill and it’s not easy.

“Had my first go this morning on @gmb and it’s safe to say that it didn’t go so well…

“Apologies for my lack of experience and wooden performance. I’ll loosen up and get better with time, hopefully!”

Viewers complained about the reality star’s clunky style, obvious reading of the autocue, and lack of personality in making his entertainment report.

Some viewers took pity on the nervous star, offering him encouragement in case he’s ever asked back for another go.

Matthews, who has a five-month-old son with wife Vogue Williams and features with them in fly-on-the-wall documentary Spencer, Vogue and Baby Too, was the latest new entertainment recruit for GMB.

Recently, TOWIE star and recently-eliminated Dancing on Ice contestant Gemma Collins had a crack at the job after impressing usual host Piers Morgan with her brave recovery from an embarrassing and painful fall on the ice.

Richard Arnold is the show’s regular entertainment reporter, but was taking a break from his job this morning in anticipation of Hollywood’s awards season highlight, the Oscars, which take place on Sunday night in Los Angeles.

Anchors Morgan and Susanna Reid are also on an extended break from the show, with Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway filling in for them.
