Spider-Man star Tom Holland takes social media break as he reveals it makes him 'spiral'

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has revealed he has made the decision to leave social media to protect his mental health.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, the star said he was only returning briefly to make an important announcement.

In the three-minute-long recording, Holland said he had been trying to make the video for "about an hour" as he struggled to work out what he wanted to say.

But then he says: "I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating and overwhelming.

"I get caught up and spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately it's very detrimental to my mental state.

"So I decided to take a step back and delete the app."

In the accompanying caption, he wrote that he had felt "compelled" to come back online to share some information about a charity he is supporting.

Stem4 runs an education programme to help teenagers and their families manage their mental health.

"There is an awful stigma against mental health and I know that asking for help and seeking help isn't something that we should be ashamed of but it is something that is much easier said than done," he added.

At the end of the video, Holland says he is "going to disappear from Instagram again" and adds: "Thanks for your love and support. I love you all and I'll speak to you soon."

Earlier this year Holland began filming The Crowded Room, an AppleTV+ series exploring true stories about people who have learnt to live with mental illness.
