NINE years ago, Oisín McGrath tragically passed away. Last week, the foundation set up in honour of him was named Sporting Champion.

The Oisín McGrath Foundation has, for years, promoted organ donation and brain injury awareness, while also providing thousands in support of local sporting groups and young athletes in Fermanagh.

Oisín's mother, Sharon, who set up the foundation, dedicated the award to her late son, whom she described as “a fantastic sportsman".

Speaking of the award win, Sharon said: "This was absolutely not expected at all. There were so many fantastic nominations, so to win is a true honour."

She continued: "The Foundation was set up nine years ago when Oisin was tragically killed. We wanted to do something, and the ripples soon spread out to have a positive impact on people.

"We have to have a very difficult conversation about organ donation in the worst of circumstances. We wanted to encourage people to have that conversation before something happens.

"If you haven’t had that conversation yet, have it. It’s a conversation that’s needed around all our kitchen tables, and make sure to get the message out there."

The Sporting Champion of the Year category was sponsored by the Belmore Court & Motel, Enniskillen.

Sponsor Terry McCartney, Belmore Court & Motel, said: "What a fantastic night, and very timely given the current climate.

"It was very emotional hearing the stories, and seeing the people on stage, but it was well worth attending. We were also proud to sponsor one of the events.

"I am sure the judges found it very difficult to decide winners. There was a wide range of shortlisted candidates. The Oisín McGrath Foundation was a worthy winner for all they do for all types of sport all over Fermanagh.

"It is a very memorable night and we look forward to next year."
