St Mirren have snapped up Shrewsbury Town midfielder Roland Idowu on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old Dubliner became the club’s fourth signing of the summer after putting pen to paper at the SMiSA Stadium.

Idowu made 10 appearances for the Shrews after joining the Sky Bet League One side in January following an impressive spell with League of Ireland Premier Division outfit Waterford.

He signed a two-and-a-half year deal in Shropshire but will spend the 2024-25 campaign north of the border in the William Hill Premiership.

“I’m delighted to be here,” Idowu told the club website. “I’ve heard a lot about the club and spoke to the manager [Stephen Robinson] and Diarmuid O’Carroll [assistant manager]. I’m really happy and excited for what the club is pushing for this season.

“I know Richard Taylor. We played together before and he told me it was a good club. I’ve seen what the club achieved last season and how they are pushing to go further. I just want to come in and help out.

“I’m excited to get out in front of the fans and get playing again. I’m a creative player who gives a lot physically, I like to get about the place with goals and assists. Speaking with the manager, he has given me the confidence that I can come in and do that.”

Boss Robinson feels his new recruit adds an extra dimension to the squad and can be used in a number of different ways.

“Roland is someone we feel that is highly talented,” he said. “He can play as an eight, he can play anywhere in the midfield and he can play a little bit further forward in behind the strikers.

“He’s different from what we have and someone I’ve kept an eye on from afar so we’re delighted to have him on board.”

Saints – who returned to Ralston on Monday for pre-season training – have already signed keeper Ellery Balcombe on loan from Brentford, defender Shaun Rooney and midfielder Oisin Smyth. Forward James Scott’s loan from Exeter City was converted into a permanent deal at the end of last season.

Meanwhile, Saints have also been linked with making a permanent move for full-back Jaden Brown.

The 25-year-old made eight appearances as he spent the second half of last season on loan with the Buddies from League One outfit Lincoln City.

Brown, who is under contract at Sincil Bank following publication of the Imps’ retained list, would provide defensive cover on both flanks for Rooney and Scott Tanser.
