The stage is set for a winner takes all finale to the Utility Hut South of Scotland League title race.

Wednesday night will see the final league game of the season when Creetown host Dalbeattie Star at Castle Cary Park.

Star go into the game two points clear after beating Wigtown 7-0 on Wednesday night.

Star boss Eddie Warwick said: “It’s a shoot-out now.

“Nine months ago when we were building this team, if you’d said we’d go into the final game of the season with a chance of winning the league we’d have taken it as you’re playing against teams that have had two or three seasons together.

“If someone said we’ll go into the final game of the season to win the league, you’d take their hand off.

“Another 10 teams can’t do that so we should be proud of ourselves for getting in that position.”

Creetown narrowly missed out on a first league title last season when they were pipped at the post by Abbey Vale.

But they now have their destiny in their own hands.

Gaffer, Jamie Adams said: “It’s a brilliant game for the club and the boys. Dalbeattie are a good team in this league.

“I’ve kept telling the boys to keep going in every game we’ve played for the last two years and always be competitive. They deserve this opportunity but that’s all it is – an opportunity. In football you need to take these moments. We know how good Dalbeattie are but we know how good we can be as well and it’s going to be a great game.”

The packed finale has resulted in some teams playing four times a week to catch up with fixtures.

However, Creetown have the luxury of going into this game after a 10-day break. Adams said: “It’s quite handy because I’ve always said we need to get games played rather than have a build up of games.

“They’ve supported me and it’s paid off. I don’t think it gives you an advantage because in a one-off game both teams are going to be up for it as they know what’s at stake.”

Star could have been heading to Wigtown last week knowing a win would have been enough for the title.

But they slipped up midweek when they lost 3-2 at home to Abbey Vale – despite going 3-2 up.

Warwick said: “We just didn’t turn up in the second half, there’s no point dressing it up, and it gave us our first league defeat of the season.

“The better team won, they were very good in the second half and we didn’t turn up. Something just didn’t click and we probably produced our worst 45 minutes of the season at the wrong time.

“Credit to Abbey Vale, who I thought were excellent considering the amount of games they’ve played, they were still full of running in the last 30 minutes.”
