Star Trek's Jean-Luc Picard spin-off series is officially set for a late 2019 premiere.

The highly-anticipated show will welcome back franchise veteran Sir Patrick Stewart, who played the iconic Starfleet captain in TV and film up until 16 years ago when Star Trek: Nemesis was released.

Speaking at the UBS Annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York yesterday (December 4), CBS All Access boss David Nevins discussed what's to come from the Star Trek franchise as well as offering a premiere timeline for the much-anticipated spin-off.

"Star Trek Discovery season two is in a great place," he declared, via The Hollywood Reporter, before revealing some key information on the Picard spin-off. "And there is huge anticipation for Picard [the Stewart vehicle]. That will [premiere] at the end of the year. And we're doing these Star Trek short films in between."

It was confirmed back in October that the series will commence production in April 2019, which just goes to show how quick the turnaround can be in the television industry.

Meanwhile, Sir Patrick himself has teased his excitement about returning to the character.

"During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership," he said in a statement.

"I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.

"I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavour to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more."
