The BBC has revealed a first look at Stephen Merchant as serial killer Stephen Port in the upcoming factual drama The Barking Murders.

The snap shows The Office star in character as the convicted murderer with a vacant glare below his side-swept fringe while wearing a blue checked shirt.

The drama series tells the harrowing story of Port's crimes from the viewpoint of the families of his victims, as they work to discover the truth about what really happened to their sons and brothers.

Speaking of his involvement, Merchant said: "This is a story that can’t be ignored – how four young lives were lost and their families’ brave attempt to uncover what happened."

"This factual drama will shed light on their story, so it’s a privilege to be a part of telling it with the brilliant combination of Jeff Pope, Neil McKay and the BBC.”

The sneak peek at Merchant in his new role comes just days after we got our first look at Sheridan Smith in the upcoming series.

Smith plays the role of the mother of Port victim Anthony Walgate, Sarah Sak.

Also confirmed to appear in the drama are Doctor Who and Bodyguard star Stephanie Hyam, Line of Duty's Leanne Best, Rufus Jones, Samuel Barnett and Robert Emms.

Port is currently serving a life sentence in prison after he was convicted of four murders.

The Barking Murders will air on BBC One in the UK later this year. The series will also stream on BritBox in the US.
