Steve Carell to Star in Upcoming Bill Lawrence Comedy at HBO

Steve Carell is set to star in a new single-camera half-hour comedy series from Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses. The currently untitled project has been given a straight-to-series order from HBO, TVLine has learned.

The 10-episode series’ logline states that the show is “set on a college campus, centering on an author’s complicated relationship with his daughter.”

“HBO has long been a standard bearer of quality TV,” Lawrence said in a statement. “Getting to do a show there with Steve Carell is an immediate career highlight for Matt and me. Nothing can go wrong now.”

“The combination of Steve Carell and Bill Lawrence promises to be full of great laughs, warmth and charm,” said executive vice president of HBO & Max comedy programming Amy Gravitt. “We’re thrilled to be the home for this long overdue collaboration.”

Lawrence and Tarses wrote the series’ first episode and will also executive-produce. Additional EPs include Carell, Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer.

Lawrence is currently the showrunner of Apple TV+’s Shrinking, which he co-created with Brett Goldstein and Jason Segel. He also developed and is executive-producing the Vince Vaughn-led Bad Monkey for Apple, which is set to debut on Aug. 14.

Carell, meanwhile, will star opposite Tina Fey in the upcoming Netflix comedy series The Four Seasons. That project was announced in April.
