'STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces' is on Apple TV+ March 29
Steve Martin's decades-long comedy career gets the spotlight in a new documentary.
PEOPLE is exclusively debuting the first trailer for STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces, which features new interviews with Martin, now 78, and insight into his standup and film career.
Martin jokes in a statement about the film, "I’m glad they chose me to be the subject of a biography about me."
The two-part documentary is directed and produced by Morgan Neville, whose 2013 film 20 Feet from Stardom won an Oscar.
"I’ve been a fan of Steve’s since I was a 10 year old memorizing his comedy albums," says Neville. "I have always followed his career, but making this film opened up so many more sides of Steve to me."
"Steve said he wanted to make this film because it was time, and I think that’s true," the director adds. "We were also able to find incredible materials of Steve’s entire career, from standup through the movies, that have never been seen."

A synopsis for STEVE! (martin) explains that the film "dives into his extraordinary story from two distinct points of view, with companion documentaries that feature never-before-seen footage and raw insights into Steve’s personal and professional trials and triumphs."
The first, titled "Then," chronicles Martin's "early struggles and meteoric rise to revolutionize standup before walking away at 35." And the second, "Now" focuses on "the present day, with Steve Martin in the golden years of his career, retracing the transformation that led to happiness in his art and personal life."
Known for a heyday of comedy movies like Parenthood, Father of the Bride, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and more, the doc features interviews with famous costars like Tina Fey and his Only Murders in the Building pal Martin Short.
"Sitting around watching Steve and Martin Short work on jokes all day was the most I’ve ever laughed working as a director," says Neville. "Steve is a smart and complex person, but he’s also really funny — and so are his friends!"
The filmmaker notes that Martin "is somebody who’s lived many lives."
"It’s amazing that so many people have a personal connection to Steve’s career, yet they’re all different: For some it’s the 'wild and crazy guy,' for others it’s Planes, Trains and Automobiles or Father of the Bride or Bowfinger or Only Murders in the Building."
Neville adds, "Steve has always wanted to tell the stories that are not only funny but resonate on a deeper level. For many of us, Steve makes things that we watch with our families and cause us to laugh. What’s better than that?"
