He has been behind the wheel of some of the world’s fastest vehicles but now Top Gear’s anonymous speed merchant The Stig has driven into the Guinness World Records in a bumper car.

He pushed the restored Sixties fairground car past 100mph on a test run at a Suffolk airfield.

The project to rebuild the battered dodgem and get it on the road involved YouTube star Colin Furze, who shows off his eccentric contraptions online.

A 600cc motorbike engine transformed the dodgem which had a previous average speed of 5mph.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Lucia Sinigagliesi said: “We’re all used to seeing The Stig driving at high speeds — but he’s usually in a sports car and usually on a race track.

“To see him hurtle past in a classic bumper car at 100mph was surreal, but hugely impressive. Equally as impressive is the engineering expertise of Colin Furze — the combination of their skills makes for record-breaking fun.”
