Storm Doris: Heart-stopping moment Iceland Air flight struggles to land in gale-force winds at Manchester Airport

This was the frightening moment a passenger plane struggled to land at Manchester Airport in gale-force winds from Storm Doris.

The Icelandair flight from Reykjavik attempted to land at Manchester and Liverpool airports but aborted the approach due to the winds, which caused havoc on transport netwroks across the country.

The plane then declared an emergency due to “slightly low” fuel while approaching Manchester the second time and was pushed to the front of the queue.

The heart-stopping footage, taken by Airlive and posted on Twitter, shows it swaying from side to side as it comes in to land.

A spokeswoman for Iceland Air said: "We can confirm that icelandair flight FI440did declare a state of emergency at Manchester airport in order to be placed at the front of the queue for landing, as is standard procedure when an aircraft starts to run slightly low on fuel, but there were no other problems to report other than this.

"The landing was straight forward if a little bumpy due to the high winds."

Storm Doris has caused travel chaos in London with services in and out of both Euston and St Pancras suspended while rail companies worked to clear fallen trees from tracks.

Fears were raised for the travel plans of more than 80,000 football fans heading to Thursday night's Tottenham Hotspur clash with Gent at Wembley.

Fallen trees disrupted London Overground services across London with no trains able to run between Highbury & Islington to Dalston Junction, New Cross Gate, Crystal Palace or West Croydon due to a tree on the track at Brockley.

Passengers faced severe delays between Watford Junction and Willesden Junction due to a tree on the track earlier at South Kenton.

Southeastern services through West Wickham were cancelled until at least 12.45pm also due to a fallen tree on the tracks.

Dozens of flights from Heathrow Airport have been suspended due in the midst of the storm.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Train departures were suspended from London Euston this morning while we worked to clear a number of incidents involving trees, branches or other debris being blown onto the tracks. There are changes to services from Euston station and we advise passengers to check before they travel on nationalrail.co.uk.

“Storm Doris has caused significant disruption throughout the country. We are doing all we can to keep the network running.

“We have extra teams on the ground at various locations across the country to deal with any disruption, as well as imposing speed restrictions across large parts of the country for safety reasons.”
