In this stunning neon poster uploaded to Netflix's Instagram account – captioned "This summer will change everything" – Billy stands below a fearsome monster in a dark setting reminiscent of the Upside Down.

Will the Mind Flayer harness Billy's body (and his taste for violence) to wreak havoc amongst the town of Hawkins?

As hints go in the TV world, this is a pretty big one.

Actor Dacre Montgomery has previously added fuel to this theory, as he told The Wrap last year that rumours Billy will go full-on supervillain are "really interesting".

He later said that he didn't want to "speculate too much", though.

Elsewhere in the build-up to season three, co-creator Ross Duffer has revealed that the upcoming episodes are inspired by a number of classic Hollywood movies.

This includes Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking Jurassic Park, Indiana Jonesand Romancing the Stone.

"We would say that this is our most unapologetically fun season," he noted. "Yet at the same time, it is also our most horrifying and intense season.

"It's this wild mix of tones that we think really sets this season apart."

Stranger Things returns for its third season on Netflix on July 4. Seasons 1 and 2 are available for streaming now.
