Stranger Things season 5 adds Prey director Dan Trachtenberg

Stranger Things season 5 has signed up Prey's Dan Trachtenberg as a director.

It's been confirmed that Trachtenberg, whose previous credits also include 10 Cloverfield Lane, will direct an episode of the Netflix series' final season.

Other projects helmed by Trachtenberg include episodes of The Boys and Black Mirror, as well as his 2011 feature debut Portal: No Escape.

Tweeting about the news on Wednesday (June 28), he wrote: "Headed back to where it all began for me….the '80s."

Another new face Stranger Things fans can expect to see in the final season is The Terminator's Linda Hamilton in an undisclosed role.

However, the wait for new episodes of Stranger Things may be longer than planned, after it was announced production on the latest series has been paused as a result of the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike.

Stranger Things co-creators The Duffer Brothers wrote: "Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we're excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike.

"We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then – over and out. #wgastrong."

In the meantime, Maya Hawke, who stars as Robin in the series, recently gave fans a glimpse into what fans might be able to expect in the future for her character.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Hawke shared what she thought about a potential romance storyline for her character, after Robin grew closer to her crush Vickie during season four.

"I don't know. I feel mixed about it. I feel that it's both a great thing, but I also love characters where their love life is not the centre of their existence," she said.

"That friendship with Steve is so special. And friendships have been carrying me through my life. I think they're really important and they deserve their airtime."

Stranger Things seasons 1-4 are now streaming worldwide on Netflix.
