A street is in lockdown after a bomb disposal unit was called in to a house raided by police investigating the Manchester terror attack.

Police said "suspicious items" were found at the address in Wigan on Thursday and that neighbours had been evacuated.

Officers have been searching the property after a man was tackled to the floor and arrested carrying a suspicious package on Wednesday.

Witnesses posted photos on Twitter showing a bomb disposal van in the road on Thursday and at least one street sealed off with a police cordon while a helicopter circled above.

A helicopter circled above the cordoned-off area in Wigan Lane, near Wigan Royal Infirmary, while emergency vehicles filled the road.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "We made an arrest in Wigan yesterday in connection with the investigation into the incident at Manchester Arena.

"Following this arrest a house in Wigan was raided this morning and is currently being searched.

"Potentially suspicious items were found at the address and a large cordon has been put in place as EOD make an assessment.

"We have a number of officers on the ground and are evacuating people as a matter of precaution as public safety is paramount to our investigation. We are working with the local authority to accommodate those who have been evacuated."

Wigan Council said Wigan Lane was closed between Mesnes Road and Central Parkway due to "a police incident", warning the public to avoid the area.

On Wednesday a nearby nursery, Little Acorns, was put into lockdown and warned parents not to come to collect their children as police raided the house.

Eight people have been arrested in the UK by police investigating Monday night's suicide bombing, in which Salman Abedi killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert.

The 22-year-old's father and brother have also been arrested in Tripoli by Libyan authorities.
