Amanda Abbington quits Strictly Come Dancing after medical absence

Amanda Abbington has left this year's Strictly Come Dancing competition.

The Sherlock actress, 49, who was paired with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, 33, was forced to miss last weekend's show due to "medical reasons".

Fleur East, host of the BBC Two Strictly spin off show It Takes Two, announced on Monday evening Abbington had dropped out of the show.

Giving a statement on behalf of a Strictly spokesperson on the show she read: "Amanda Abbington is unable to continue in Strictly Come Dancing and has decided to withdraw from the competition.

"The show wishes her all the best for the future."

Although she and her dance partner were given a bye to this week, a source told The Daily Star claim that the London-born star was "fed up" and wanted out.

The Standard has contacted a Strictly representative for comment.

Abbington was one of the first celebrities to be announced to be taking part in this year's line-up.

However, even before the first live show there were whispers that she was planning to quit after clashing with Pernice.

According to reports, she was "left shaken" by Pernice's 'militant and aggressive' training style with tensions escalating between the pair.

Hours before she was due to take to the dancefloor for the first time, she rubbished the rumours in a swear-filled rant shared to her social media account.

Seemingly addressing the feud claims, she said: "Ignoring the bulls***, because clearly people are t****.

"Just stop it, stop it, grow up. No one gives a s***. Shut up, it's b****cks, so f*** off."

Her absence from last week's show was confirmed the day before the live show on It Takes Two.

Host Janette Manrara told viewers: "We have some breaking news, unfortunately due to medical reasons, Amanda will not be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this weekend.

"Strictly Come Dancing protocols mean that all being well, Amanda and Giovanni will return the following week. Amanda we hope you get well soon my love, sending you all the best wishes!"

Abbington broke her silence on social media the following day, by sharing an inspirational quote alongside a picture of the late actor Robin Williams.

It read: "People don't fake depression... they fake being okay. Remember that. Be kind."
