Stuck in the middle: Doomed wildebeest get stuck in three-way deadly tussle with crocodile and hippo
The unsuspecting wildebeest was snapped at by the hungry croc as it drank on the bank’s edge at a game reserve in South Africa
This is the dramatic moment a doomed wildebeest became the subject of a fearsome fight between a crocodile and a hippo.
The unsuspecting wildebeest was snapped at by the hungry croc as it drank on the bank’s edge at a game reserve in South Africa.
A frenzy quickly erupted when a nearby hippo became aggravated - initiating a fierce three-way tussle.
Watching on were a pack of peckish hyenas, which meant the wildebeest couldn't escape the water for fear of another attack.
Eventually the wildebeest ran out of energy with the crocodile overpowering it and turning it into dinner.
The hippo, whose species are not usually carnivorous, eventually retreated allowing the croc to eat in peace.
Keen photographer Nick Kleer captured the once-in-a-lifetime moment, with the action lasting for more than an hour.
Nick, 27, snapped the free-for-all at the Shingilana Dam at the Londolozi Private Game Reserve, South Africa.
He said: 'It was such an unexpected and aggressive reaction from the hippo towards the wildebeest.
'I was under the impression the hippo would go for the croc instead of the wildebeest - but that was not the case.
'It was such a surreal experience and we couldn't quite believe what was happening. It was incredibly exciting.'
