Sue Perkins will take over from Graham Norton as host of this year’s TV Bafta Awards.

The former Great British Bake Off presenter has said that she’ll simply be keeping Norton’s ‘seat warm’ while he hosts the Eurovision Song Contest coverage in Ukraine.

Announcing the news on Thursday, Perkins tweeted: “Beyond chuffed to be the one keeping the inestimable @grahnort 's seat warm this year.”

Norton replied to say: “I thought I felt something! Good luck!! I'll be thinking of you as I tidy up my commentary booth in Kiev.”

Despite being the regular host of the ceremony, Norton has been forced to step aside as Eurovision takes place just one day later.

“I am thrilled to be hosting the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards this year,” Perkins said in a statement.

“Not only is it one of the highlights of the television calendar, it’s also a superbly fun night and an opportunity to celebrate the incredible British talent we have behind our very best TV programmes.”

Perkins and presenting partner Mel Giedroyc recently pulled out of a presenting slot on ITV’s The Nightly Show after it received bad reviews.

“We were approached to take part in the series however, due to our busy schedule we were unable to make the dates work,” they said in a statement.

“We do wish the team all the best with the remainder of the series.”

This year’s TV Bafta nominations will be announced on April 11 and the ceremony will take place at the Royal Festival Hall on May 14.
