Supergirl faces her gravest challenge yet in the first look at the show's third season.

The Girl of Steel (Melissa Benoist) is fresh off fighting off an invasion of the Daxamites, but there's a human threat zeroing in on National City in a Comic-International trailer. Even superheroes need some downtime!

Just as Kara is having doubts about ever trying to life a normal life, the criminal organisation known as Intergang is enacting a revenge plot against her friend Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath).

This will be a season of major changes for the DC TV series. Last spring, it was reported that Floriana Lima will no longer be playing Alex Danvers's girlfriend Maggie Sawyer on a full-time basis.

Smallville veteran Erica Durance has also signed on in a major recasting as Kara's mother Alura because Broadway star Laura Benanti no longer has the time to dedicate to the CW series. She's seen briefly in Saturday's trailer.

However, we'll be meeting one familiar face again as Calista Flockhart reprises her role as Kara's mentor Cat Grant in the season premiere and stick around for recurring appearances throughout the year (via Entertainment Weekly).

"The way that Calista appears in the first episode is really clever," Melissa Benoist teased at Comic-Con on Saturday (July 22).

It was announced during the panel as well that Heroes and Agents of SHIELD star Adrian Pasdar has joined the cast as the Galaxy Broadcasting System's owner Morgan Edge, secret leader of Intergang.

Also joining the cast are Alias's Carl Lumbly as the Martian Manhunter's father, Jane the Virgin star Yael Grobglas as the mind-controlling Psi and young Emma Tremblay as Supergirl's biggest fan (via Deadline).

Supergirl will return to The CW in the US this autumn. In the UK, the DC TV series is screened on Sky 1.
