It's safe to say that Supergirl has gone with an unconventional choice to play Lex Luthor in a major upcoming storyline.

The CW series' producers announced on Friday (November 16) that its casting search for Superman's arch-nemesis has wrapped up, and the role has been handed to… Jon Cryer?!

Yes, they've gone with the guy who played Lex's weaselly nephew Lenny Luthor in the universally-hated 1987 flop Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. He's also known for playing lovable dorks in Pretty in Pink and Two and a Half Men.

Cryer will graduate from playing Lenny to Lex in Supergirl's 15th episode and will stick around for a major storyline that sees him facing off with sister Lena (Katie McGrath), via TVLine.

Supergirl executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller announced the casting: "We are enormous fans of Jon Cryer, and he was instantly our dream actor to play the iconic role of Lex Luthor.

"Jon is a super-talent, and the fact that he played Lenny Luthor in Superman IV brings an added layer of legacy to his casting. We're beyond thrilled to welcome Jon to the Supergirl family."

The series has already introduced Lex Luthor's mother Lillian as the head of Project Cadmus, a secret organisation that targeted both Supergirl and Superman.

Lillian is played by Brenda Strong, who is actually just five years older than Jon Cryer. There must be some Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again math going on here…

Supergirl continues on Sundays at 8pm ET on The CW in the US. Sky1 airs the show in the UK.
