The further adventures of Superman's home planet will continue.

Krypton has been renewed for a second season by US cable channel Syfy ahead of its first run wrapping up in the States on Wednesday night (May 23), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The DC Comics series has been averaging close to 2 million viewers total viewers each week (with DVR figures added in), and ranks as Syfy's most-watched debut season in the past four years. Pretty impressive, right?

Set decades before baby Kal-El is sent hurtling towards earth from his dying planet, Krypton centers around the future Superman's grandfather Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) uncovering conspiracies at the height of Kryptonian society.

Krypton has already started integrating characters from the wider DC universe, including Superman's legendary foes Doomsday and Braniac, the time traveler Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos), terrorist Jax-Ur (Hannah Waddingham) and even General Zod (Colin Salmon).

When Digital Spy chatted with Krypton's creative team last year, they hinted that DC hasn't put any restrictions on the characters that they're able to pull from the comic giant's illustrious history.

"We're blessed to have the whole DC toy box, more or less, at our disposal," executive producer Cameron Welsh said. "So far, everything that we've wanted, we've been able to get. In fact, we've been given a whole lot more that we wouldn't have dared ask for, so we're lucky."

Krypton's first season concludes tomorrow night (May 22) on Syfy in the US. E4 will air the series in the UK later in the year.
