Warning! Spoilers for Supernatural season 13, which has not yet aired in the UK, lie ahead.

OK, so there are few things more exciting in the Supernatural universe than the upcoming crossover with Scooby-Doo, but the return of Archangel Gabriel might be one of them.

After it was revealed in 'Devil's Bargain' that Gabriel didn't actually die all those years ago, fans have been waiting (im)patiently to see Richard Speight Jr's character return.

And, as it turns out, so have the Winchester brothers themselves, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. (Don't you just love a collective fanboy moment?)

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the CW's PaleyFest panel, Jared Padalecki – aka Sam Winchester – admitted that he and his onscreen brother are "thrilled" to see Gabriel out of Hell.

"[Sam and Dean] can't believe it. They're thrilled [because] they need his help more than ever," he said, before revealing that Speight Jr's comeback felt "so natural".

"It's very funny that we're kind of harkening back to a lot of season four, season five, season six mythology and it feels so natural to be going back there, to be doubling back to Gabriel, to be doubling back to Lucifer," he said.

"I'm just very excited to have Gabriel. He was sort of the last person we expected to have but now that he's around, we need his help."

So, were Sam and Dean just as surprised about Gabriel being alive and not-so well as fans were? No, of course not. "There's not a lot that really truly shocks these guys anymore," Jensen said.

"They're a bit like war-torn heroes at this point, and it's not totally unbelievable for anything to happen anymore," the actor explained.

"So I think it's more excitement at the fact that, 'Hey, we finally have somebody that we need and we can use this person, and now we have an ally that is very beneficial to have.'"

Supernatural airs on The CW in the US. Season 13 is expected to come to E4 in the UK later this year.
