Surrey residents told to 'be prepared' as flood alerts issued after heavy rain

Flood alerts have been issued in Surrey following heavy rainfall over the weekend. It comes as river levels have risen, with four alerts being issued in Surrey in the last 24 hours.

While property flooding is not currently expected in Chertsey and the surrounding area, flooding of low lying land and roads is expected today (April 28), according to the Environment Agency. It expects the river levels to remain high for the next couple of days.

It reads on the website: "We are monitoring the situation. Avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses. Flood alert area: Chertsey Bourne including Virginia Water, Thorpe Green and Chertsey and the Moat at Thorpe."

Stanwell Moor is also being affected due to river levels rising steadily at Lower River Colne and Frays River. People have been told to avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourse.

It reads: "Further rainfall is forecast throughout the morning. We will continue to monitor levels closely. Do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water."

A flood alert has also been issued for River Blackwater and The Cove Brook. The Agency said it is expected levels to peak later on this morning, before starting to fall.

Areas affected by the alert for River Blackwater include Badshot Lea, Aldershot, Farnborough, Camberley, Sandhurst, Eversley, Bramshill and Swallowfield, and the Cove Brook at Farnborough and Cove.

River levels are rising steadily on the Colne Brook; Colne (Lower) due to heavy rainfall. Areas most at risk of flooding include Colnbrook Village; Poyle; Albany Park; High Street; Mill Street; Fawsley Close; and Myrtle Close.

It reads: "Further rainfall is forecast throughout the morning. We will continue to monitor levels closely."

Other areas have alerts in place since at least April 23 including in the Crondall Area and South East London which also affecting Surrey.
