A Surrey school is making an international name for itself . The Royal Grammar School Guildford has been named the fourth best boys school in the world by a list catered for international parents.

The 500-year-old school featured on Hurun's world’s best boys school ranking, behind St Paul’s , Eton College and the American Collegiate school. This is the first time RGS has made the top 10, and it was the only new entry this year.

The HSBC Hurun Education Global High Schools 2024 list is created by taking into account leaver’s destinations and the reputation of the school among other things. It aims to help parents, primarily in China, to gain insight into the best options for overseas education.

The lists, which also cover the best girls and boarding school, only feature independents. Overall the 2024 lists are made up of 179 schools from 11 countries with around 180,000 students between them.

RGS is no stranger to best schools lists, the Guildford school regularly features in the Sunday Times Parent Power rankings, and this year was named as the number 4 independent boys' school nationally.

Located in the centre of town, the school has a long history. Students have included an ex Archbishop of Canterbury George Abbott football commentator Martin Tyler and actor Simon Bird. Impressive GCSE results include 46% of grades at a 9, the highest mark, and the school also has an array of co-curricular activities. With over 70 clubs and societies, this would have been something that was looked at when coming up with the list.

Fees for the senior school start at £7,902 for the first term. As well as the senior school, there is a sixth form as well as prep school which used to be known as Lanesborough.

Headmaster of the RGS, Dr Jon Cox said:“ I am delighted that the all-round education on offer at the RGS has been recognised in this year’s HSBC-Hurun Education Global School rankings. To be ranked as the fourth boys’ school in the world is a significant accolade and testament to the values we espouse and the nurturing environment we create.”

"While remaining loyal to our founding principles in 1509 to educate local students here in Guildford, in the 21st century all schools must innovate and develop. As our RGS global community grows, so we are proud that our values of Inclusivity, Scholarship, Integrity, Respect, Courage and Collaboration are being nurtured and celebrated in students across the globe.”

The list of top boys schools was dominated by UK schools, with only three other establishments from the USA featuring. Most of these where from London, with RGS and Tonbridge school being the only UK education centres outside of the capital. On the girl's list nearby Downe House School in Reading made number 10.
