Susanna Reid has said she is taking a step back on social media because she is at “breaking point” over the “nastiness” of trolls.

The Good Morning Britain star said she is a huge fan of platforms like Twitter and Instagram and is used to being criticised, but that things have worsened of late.

Writing in the Daily Mail, she said “there are times when even thick skin gets thinner”.

Reid, 49, said the “viciousness” against her ramped up in response to her outrage about the death of George Floyd in the US and that she was told “to ‘shut up’ and ‘get in your kennel’.”

The presenter was bombarded with sexist insults that she said made her stomach “lurch”.

Reid said she has now decided to take a stand.

The mother-of-three revealed that although she enjoys looking through the sites she will be cutting down from now on.

“I’m not willing to let the abusers win, but I’ve turned off all notifications and stopped checking my phone,” she said.

“I’ll be blocking the worst trolls, and looking at my feed only when I need information on a news story.”

Reid said that she wants the owners of such sites to start protecting users, suggesting that those who post racist, abusive and threatening comments should be traced and then barred.

“Social media has become a dark place,” said the TV star.

Reid fronts ITV’s Good Morning Britain alongside Piers Morgan and Ben Shephard.
