Suzanne Shepherd, The Sopranos and Goodfellas Actress, Dead at 89

Suzanne Shepherd, best known for her roles in The Sopranos and Goodfellas, has died. She was 89.

The actress passed away Friday morning in her New York City home, her agent confirmed to our sister site Variety.

Shepherd played Mary DeAngelis, the mother of Edie Falco’s Carmela Soprano, on the HBO crime drama The Sopranos between 2000 and 2007. Ray Abruzzo, who played Carmine Lupertazzi Jr., has already paid tribute to his Sopranos co-star on Instagram, calling Shepherd “a force of nature.”

The actress also notably portrayed the mother of Karen Hill (played by Lorraine Bracco) in Goodfellas, the 1990 Martin Scorsese film following the rise and fall of a mob associate. In addition to Bracco, the film stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci.

Shepherd got her first acting credit as Aunt Tweedy in the 1988 romantic comedy Mystic Pizza starring Julia Roberts. She went on to appear in numerous other movies during her decades-long career, including Working Girl, Uncle Buck, Lolita and Requiem for a Dream. She most recently appeared as Tess in the 2023 movie The Performance.

Shepherd’s other TV credits include appearances in Blue Bloods, Ed, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Third Watch.
