Switzerland face an anxious wait to see if they will make Euro 2020's Round of 16 after Xherdan Shaqiri's superb double helped them secure third place in Group A on Sunday with a 3-1 win over a dismal Turkey side.

Switzerland, who finished level on four points with Wales but behind on goal difference, will hope to secure a spot in the knockout round as one of the four best third-placed finishers from the six groups.

Turkey, who finished fourth with three defeats, were tipped as pre-tournament dark horses but instead will head home after a hugely disappointing campaign in which all three games were lost and they conceded eight goals and scored only once.

The game encapsulated Turkey's tournament, as they began full of fire and fury at a scintillating pace, only to collapse quickly as Switzerland outmanoeuvred them tactically to take an early lead.

The Swiss went ahead when Haris Seferovic received a pass from Steven Zuber on the edge of the area before rifling the ball into the bottom right corner in the sixth minute.

Exasperated, Turkey regrouped and tried again, only to go 2-0 down 20 minutes later when Zuber found Shaqiri in a similar position, and he curled an exquisite shot beyond the dive of Ugurcan Cakir.

Turkey had their chances, but Swiss keeper Yann Sommer made a string of superb first-half saves as they searched for their first goal of the tournament. Irfan Kahveci finally delivered it, salvaging some pride for Turkey in the 62nd minute with a spectacular strike from distance to reduce the deficit.

Whatever joy their thousands of supporters in the stands felt was short-lived as their shortcomings were shown up again six minutes later as Shaqiri fired home from another Zuber pass to complete a surging counter-attack. With Shaqiri withdrawn, Granit Xhaka hit a post with a powerful free kick as the Swiss continued to chase the goals that might have enabled them to take second spot, but to no avail.

Burak Yilmaz was left isolated up front and the Turkish challenge fell away. All too often, they settled for wild shots from distance, but it was the defence that was the source of their problems.

Switzerland created 23 scoring opportunities, getting 10 of them on target, and Turkey never got to grips with the scheming Zuber as he set up all three goals.

Turkey head coach Senol Gunes blamed a number of factors for the "unacceptable performance" of his team at Euro 2020 but he is not planning to resign amid growing pressure back home.

"This young team will mark the next 10 years of Turkish football but we are well aware that such a performance at this tournaments is unacceptable," Gunes said."I am responsible for this," Gunes added, blaming the media response, his players' lack of experience, individual mistakes and bad luck for the team's worst-ever performance at a European Championship.

The 69-year-old coach, who led Turkey to a stunning third-place finish at the 2002 World Cup, has been back at the helm since 2019.

"I do not think of resignation at the moment, the bill of failure has to be paid but media is also responsible, the management is also responsible, the coaching team is also responsible," Gunes said. "Players and individual mistakes are also responsible. Before the tournament, we were expected to play the final, and now we are being criticised so harshly.

"It was a big test for us but sometimes these failures can add more experience than success," Gunes added.

Defender Merih Demiral agreed that the experience, though painful, contained important learning points. "When the expectations are high, the disappointment is bigger ... I apologise to our nation. I trust my friends, we have learned a lot from this experience," he said.

Switzerland will now have to wait for the knockout picture to become clearer, but their industrious performance and Shaqiri's finishing bodes well for the next phase if they make it.

"I think we played like a unit, and it was crucial today against this team. We knew if we play good we're going to create a lot of chances against this team, and we did so," Shaqiri said.

Embolo bullocks down the inside left, screeching ahead of Soyuncu who has been curiously passive, as if he thinks his yellow card from the first two games mustn't be added to as it would rule him out of the next round which he isn't going to qualify for anyway. Any road, Embolo unleashes a heavy right-foot shot and Cakir dives to his left to turn it past the post.

Turkey, who were very good in qualification and in their World Cup 22 qualifiers so far, have been impressive going forward and terrible at the back - all Selfridges' windows and 50p mart inside. Poor Ayhan is being left to deal with Shaqiri, Embolo and Seferovic virtually on his own.

Switzerland's wing-backs have allowed them to stretch the game and given Shaqiri more space than he has enjoyed in five years. With the help of Embolo's movement and Seferovic's hounding of Demiral, Switzerland are on the threshold of making it into the last 16.

Shaqiri slips ahead of Ayhan again and runs through the middle of the field towards the D. Soyuncu is caught in no man's land - should he close him down (yes) or sit back (no). Eventually he does come out, as does Cakir and the keeper manages to do enough to make Shaqiri snatch at his shot and drag it inches wide.

04:30 PM

27 min SWI 2 TUR 0

Shaqiri special, taking the pass from the left from Zuber, letting it run across him through the D before wrapping his right instep around it and firing it unstoppably into the top right corner. Ayhan can't cope with the movement of the Swiss forwards and attacking midfielder. They're double-manning him almost every time. Tufan needs to lend a hand. Too many players too posh to do defensive work in the Turkey midfield.

Good afternoon

Senol Gunes, Turkey's most successful coach and architect of their run to the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup, accepts his side need a miracle to reach the last 16 of Euro 2020.

Turkey are on the threshold of being knocked out after defeats by Italy and Wales in their first two matches in Group A. They now cannot secure a top-two position and will need to beat Switzerland in their final group match in Baku on Sunday to have any hope of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.

Gunes accepts it is a tall order and, after beginning the tournament with high hopes and the backing of many as dark horses, including on this website, is particularly ruing the costly 2-0 defeat by Wales on Wednesday.

"It is zero points and no goals and we are very sad on our part," said Gunes. "We are sorry and we know the expectations of the nation are on us. We were really below those expectations. After the first game against Italy it felt like it was the end of the world and we have to get over this failure. We could have overcome this in the second game and if we had things would be much different.

"Now we are in a situation where we will need miracles to happen. After all the efforts we put into this tournament it would be very sad to go home now. We just made so many mistakes in these two games. You can lose against Italy, that is quite normal, but if you lose against Wales you lose your chances.

"Our chances are really slim now. On paper we were better than Wales but we didn't use that chance very well.

"We are not happy about it, like the supporters and other people who criticise us, but I am still confident about my players. We can change this. On Sunday I would like to play with a different understanding and approach."

Switzerland are in the same boat, desperate to rescue a disappointing campaign after their opening draw with Wales was followed by a 3-0 trouncing by Italy.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic said: "The most important thing will be to have more presence than in the last game and influence things.

"We need to find our values and connections between parts of the team. We have to give our all, 100 per cent, to win the game. By getting three points we would have a realistic chance of getting to the next round.

"We suffered against Italy but now we are only focused on the game on Sunday and giving 100 per cent to try to win the game."

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is available after a quick return home following the birth of his second daughter.
