Supporters Celebrate as President Bashar al-Assad Re-elected

Syria’s state-owned news agency posted footage showing supporters of President Bashar al-Assad celebrating in Aleppo on May 28 after he won a fourth term in office in an election denounced by US and European leaders as neither “free nor fair”.

Footage uploaded by the state-owned Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) shows large crowds gathered on the streets waving Syrian flags and holding placards of Assad.

Head of parliament Hammouda Sabbagh announced the results at a news conference on Thursday, saying voter turnout was at around 78%. Assad won 95.1% of the vote. Credit: Syrian Arab News Agency via Storyful
