Tan France has shared that he was sent "really horrible" messages after announcing that he and husband Rob France were set to welcome a son via a surrogate later in the year.

The Queer Eye star said that while the majority of the comments he received were "beautiful", there were some abusive ones too.

"I posted the announcement, and we were inundated with beautiful, beautiful messages," he told Us Weekly.

"But five percent, maybe three percent, were really horrible. And it was, basically like, 'This is terrible you’re doing this. Babies should only be conceived naturally.'"

The 38-year-old added that he wished people "understood the process better" when it came to surrogacy.

"People wanted to be my surrogate," he said. "We have a wonderful relationship. I think that there’s a really archaic idea of what surrogacy and IVF is. These children, these babies are real babies. The amount of times I hear that they’re artificial babies … they are not artificial babies.”

He announced his baby news on Instagram back in April as he posed topless with a picture of a sonogram imposed over his stomach.

France captioned the snap: "So happy to finally share that. WE’RE HAVING A BABY!! No, I’m not pregnant, despite this VERY realistic pic.

"With the greatest gift/help of the most wonderful surrogate, Rob and I are lucky enough to be on our way to being parents, this Summer.

"Something we’ve wanted for SOooo many years. Our hearts are so full right now. I cannot wait to hold this baby, and to show him so much love."
