Who Is Tara Lipinski's Husband? All About Todd Kapostasy
Tara Lipinski and Todd Kapostasy have been married since 2017
Tara Lipinski may be an Olympic gold medalist, but these days her family is her most prized possession.
The Olympian married her husband Todd Kapostasy in 2017 after the pair met two years earlier at the Sports Emmy Awards. Six years later, Lipinski and Kapostasy welcomed their first child, Georgie, together.
Georgie was born via surrogate after Lipinski struggled for five years with infertility, including four miscarriages and symptoms of endometriosis. While the stress of their fertility journey put a strain on their marriage, Lipinski told PEOPLE in October 2023 that it also brought them closer.
"It gave us time to figure out how to support each other," she said. "I would have loved for us to not have gone through all this. But now, I can't imagine it any other way."
The pair have also been open about their journey on their shared podcast, Unexpecting, where they’ve discussed their plans for their family and the ups and downs of their experience with IVF.
So who is Tara Lipinski’s husband? Here’s everything to know about Todd Kapostasy and his relationship with the retired figure skater.
He is a producer and director
Kapostasy’s work mainly focuses on sports documentaries and commercials, which he produces and directs. In the documentary sphere, he has worked on various projects, including one that tells the story of a golf player who grew up in a Ukrainian orphanage and went on to become the U.S.’s top one-armed adaptive golfer.
He also does commercial work focusing on athletic brands like Nike and NFL teams. He shot a commercial with Giannis Antetokounmpo for the former, calling it a “career bucket list” item.
“Tiny but fun career bucket list box checked off ☑️ getting to work with Nike recently,” he wrote on his Instagram. “Also, let’s get the wheels in motion to change the rules so Giannis can run for president. What a guy.”
They met at the Sports Emmy Awards
Lipinski and Kapostasy first crossed paths at the 2015 Sports Emmy Awards when the figure skating commentator presented an award to him.
When Lipinski attended the same event eight years later, she reminisced on Instagram about the anniversary of their meeting, and how the one thing that struck her when she met Kapostasy was his shoes.
“One of my favorite events BECAUSE its where I met my HUSBAND,” she wrote in the caption. “May 5th, 8 years ago on that very stage handing him an Emmy thinking his shoes were nice and also thinking ‘man this guy wins a lot.’ ”
Seven months after they met, Kapostasy proposed to Lipinski and shared his side of their meet-cute on Instagram.
“Of the 45+ Emmys given out that night, @taralipinski happened to hand me mine,” he wrote. “I didn't think much of it- aside from the fact she that she looked great in her blue dress. The next day I discovered that my Aunt had become friends with Tara while covering the Olympics a few years back.”
He continued, “It took a little convincing, but @cjansing eventually agreed to introduce us. I'd imagine there are a thousand things that had to happen to get us on that stage together back in May. Crazy how life works.”
They got married in 2017
On June 24, 2017, Lipinski and Kapostasy tied the knot at Middleton Place in Charleston, South Carolina. With 245 guests in attendance, their wedding was a full-fledged celebration complete with boozy popsicles, over 40,000 flowers and a six-tier cake.
“It was a fairytale come to life,” Lipinski told PEOPLE after the big day. “I felt like I was living in the moment with all of my friends by my side and marrying the love of my life — it was the best day of my life.”
“She was so beautiful,” Kapostasy added of Lipinski walking down the 200-foot aisle in her hand-embroidered strapless Reem Acra gown complete with a 20-foot train.
Kapostasy shared that Lipinski pored over the details for months since they had over a year to plan and when he walked into the venue he was stunned by what he saw.
“Tara designed everything,” the director said. “Like when I walked into the tent, everything she’d been talking about and agonizing about over for a year, every inch of that tent, was incredible.”
The couple embarked on a 40-day honeymoon across the globe (including Switzerland, Greece and Italy) after their nuptials.
“Everything was so beautiful, and it went by so fast, but at the same time I was able to take it all in and take mental snapshots of the best day of my life,” Lipinski said. “It was perfect.”
They host a podcast together
After five years of keeping her fertility journey private, Lipinski and Kapostasy decided it was time to share their struggles with the world in the form of a sit-down podcast, Unexpecting.
"We felt like let's do this together,” Lipinski told PEOPLE in August 2023. “We will produce it, direct it, buy everything we need to set up a studio in our home where we're comfortable and we feel that we're in this safe place to talk and bring up all these memories together."
In the podcast, the couple both share their side of “every single event” that happened to them during their efforts to get pregnant. Lipinski said filming the podcast helped the two “heal” and process the “traumatic” journey.
"We didn't want to bring in anyone else,” she said. “We didn't want someone to take care of audio or the camera. We wanted to feel like this was our thing and that we could get to a super vulnerable place. Obviously, this has been pretty traumatic for me, so I definitely needed to do it at home and to be able to just do it with Todd."
Lipinski added: "It just felt really nice that we could do it on our own terms, tell our story the way we wanted to, and to document this time in our life, and I think a little bit to maybe heal while we do this."
He and Lipinski welcomed their first child in 2023
Lipinski and Kapostasy announced the birth of their daughter, Georgie, in October 2023. The little girl was born via surrogate, a process Lipinski was initially hesitant about but was ready to try after her struggles.
"I loved the surrogacy journey, I really did," Lipinski told PEOPLE. "I had so much trauma around pregnancy. Something just clicked where my outlook changed and it became less about me and my experience. It wasn't about the pregnancy anymore."
Now, Lipinski and Kapostasy have gotten what they “dreamed about for so long” — and every sleepless night or crying fit has been worth it.
"Even when I'm like, 'Okay, take an hour nap,' I'm almost too excited,” she admitted. “I'm like, 'She's there. Just watch her a little longer.’ ”
Lipinski said she looks back at the experience and feels that she and Kapostasy are just “in awe" and "grateful.” While the journey wasn’t easy, she said she was “proud” to have gone through it.
"She's just as cute as a button and I can't stop staring at her," Lipinski said of her newborn. "Everything just feels emotional and surreal."
He is supportive of her career
Lipinski’s no. 1 fan might be her husband. Nearly every year, Kapostasy posts a celebratory message on the anniversary of Lipinski’s Olympic gold medal win, often professing his admiration for his wife’s athleticism.
On the 22nd anniversary of her achievement, Kapostasy posted a picture of a then-16-year-old Lipinski jumping on the couch after she found out she won gold at the 1998 Olympics.
“Generally speaking, I’m a sappy, emotional wreck, but looking back through photos and video of @taralipinski 1998 Olympic skate always gets me teary eyed,” he wrote in the caption. “What that little booger was able to accomplish back then (to steal a line from Larry David) was pretty... pretty good (and look at the vertical on the celebration!) It really never gets old celebrating this remarkable accomplishment.”
He is also supportive of Lipinski’s work as a sports commentator alongside her pal and fellow former Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir. In February 2018, he posted a photo promoting the pair’s segment as they covered the sport during the 2018 Winter Olympics.
“Can’t wait to see and hear these two do their thing starting on Friday (especially the one on the left),” he wrote. “The Wall Street Journal essentially said they’re the greatest commentators in the history of organized sports in an article today (tell me something I didn’t already know...), so it makes sense to watch. It’d be like passing up the opportunity to see Brady and MJ in their prime.”
