A teacher has been praised for her wonderful response to the Manchester terror attack after she ditched the school curriculum to let her pupils enjoy a day in the sunshine.

Liane Nicholson said instead of teaching her usual classes they went outside and “turned our face to the sunshine and lived,” she wrote on Facebook.

“In light of what has happened I decided that my class of 5-year-olds were not going to be made to spend their morning doing phonics and listening to the maths input,” she said.

“We made pictures from leaves and flowers, we poured water all over ourselves, found mini beasts and made homes for them, dug for fossils and made mud pies. We rolled down the banking, screamed and laughed.”

She added: “We also made today hug day and anyone could ask for a hug or give a hug to a friend. I was inundated with hugs today, nothing about the atrocities was mentioned to my babies (all 30 of them) but they seemed to sense the importance of being alive and free more than usual today. Innocent children, bringing joy to all those around them.

“They make me proud to be a teacher.”

Her response has been applauded by many social media commentators,  Carole Cooper wrote: “How wonderful to give those children a beautiful memory of life. Great teaching.”

Jan Anne Kendall wrote: “Thoughtful teacher what a great thing to do for your class.”

Marion Stoneman added: “Every school should have a teacher like you.”

A homemade bomb detonated in the foyer of Manchester Arena at the end of an Ariana Grande concert killed 22 people.
