AN INTREPID group of firefighters and friends have taken on a huge challenge in memory of a much-loved colleage.

The annual Stu’s Phoenix Challenge in the Brecon Beacons, now in its fifth year, is held in tribute to group commander Stu Crebbin of Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service who died in March 2021 aged 46 after a 12-month battle with cancer.

In 2020, he undertook the Brecon Beacons 10 Peaks Traverse with his Phoenix Challenge team, covering 42 miles in 24 hours.

Despite having intense chemotherapy and immunotherapy sessions in the lead-up, Mr Crebbin completed most of the challenge.

This year, 51 walkers including representatives from three different fire services, retired colleagues, family, friends and even three dogs, undertook the challenge to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity (link to fundraiser page here).

“Two family-friendly options gave the opportunity for all ages and abilities to take part, and enjoy a fantastic day out in the Brecon Beacons while raising money for the Fire Fighters Charity,” said organiser crew commander Spencer Jones.

The total raised this year is fast approaching £1,000 and, over the five challenges to date, the total is now more than £25K.
