Tenerife introducing new fee for UK tourists on holiday from 2025

Tenerife will introduce higher fees for UK tourists who are heading abroad on holidays. Tenerife, one of the most popular Canary Islands, alongside the likes of Lanzarote, will start charging Brits heading abroad more for their holiday under a strict crackdown and clampdown.

From January 1, 2025, Tenerife plans to impose a new charge, which has been described as an 'eco-tax' and is part of the island's new tourism strategy. The Tenerife council confirmed this weekend that they aim to implement the new charge by the start of next year in another blow for Brits - amid rising tension on the holiday island.

It will apply to all of Tenerife's most famous protected sites, including Mount Teide volcano and several rural parks and hamlets like Masca. Tenerife authorities confirmed an eco tax will be introduced on 1 January 2025 and holidaymakers will be slapped with the charge when visiting protected sites.

The move will help placate protestors who demand changes to tourism on the island. The protesters want more extensive changes including the introduction of a general tourist tax and a moratorium on building new hotels and tourist accommodation and they took to the island's streets earlier this month to protest against the presence of Brits.

The income generated will be ploughed back into the upkeep, maintenance and improvements of the open spaces. A spokesman for the Tenerife government said the introduction of this eco tax was necessary due to the sheer number of people now visiting the island.

All revenue generated from entry fees will be dedicated to conserving, maintaining, and enhancing Tenerife’s natural landscapes, ensuring their longevity for generations to come. Other steps include managing visitor flow, optimising parking infrastructure, improving signage, and bolstering surveillance.

Plans are underway to introduce new services like improved access points and informative resources to enrich visitors’ understanding and appreciation too.
