The mayor of a Tenerife town where missing Jay Slater was potentially spotted has spoken out about the sighting. A grainy CCTV image captured a figure walking past a church in Santiago del Tiede at about 6pm on Monday, June 17 - the day Jay was reported missing.

The scene is about four miles from where Jay was last seen. But Mayor Emilio Navarro has now said he does not believe the 19-year-old ever made it to the town.

He said: "He's not here." Speaking to the Independent, he added: "The Guardia Civil sent us an email asking for our security cameras. We could not give it to them as they are organised through a separate company, so the police are speaking to them.

"But that CCTV picture is not from us and I do not recognise that place - I do not think it is in Santiago del Tiede and he is not here. We will help the police but it makes no sense.

"We have had family and journalists here but we have seen no police." Jay, from Lancashire, vanished while attempting to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus, Manchester Evening News reports.

The trip would have taken him about 11 hours on foot. The apprentice bricklayer had been partying at the three-day NRG music festival on the Spanish island with two friends.

He then drove with two men he met at the festival to an Airbnb in a remote area in the north of the island. His friend Lucy Mae was the last person to hear from Jay.

He called her to say he needed a drink and had one per cent battery on his phone left. The desperate search for Jay continues, with units pulled in from Madrid to help with rescue efforts.

The Guardia Civil is focussing efforts to the north of the Masca Gorge. Three separate ravines - including one where it is believed Jay's phone last 'pinged' shortly after he disappeared - are also being searched.

Mountain rescue teams, local police, and fire crews have been scouring the vast landscape, with sniffer dogs, drones and helicopters deployed.
