Tenerife town mayor says 'Jay Slater was never here' after CCTV released

Missing teenager Jay Slater was never in the Tenerife town where he is said to have been captured on CCTV after his disappearance, it has been claimed today.

Footage has emerged showing a figure walking past a church in Santiago del Tiede, a town around four miles from where the 19-year-old was last seen.

The apprentice bricklayer was last spotted at around 6pm on Monday. But Santiago del Tiede Mayor Emilio Navarro said he does not believe the person in the grainy footage is the missing youngster.

And he is unsure if the British holidaymaker, who was in Tenerife on his first foreign holiday with friends, ever made it to the town. He said: "He's not here."

Manchester Evening News reports that, speaking to the Independent, he added: "The Guardia Civil sent us an email asking for our security cameras. We could not give it to them.

"They are organised through a separate company. The police are speaking to them. But that CCTV picture is not from us and I do not recognise that place.

"I do not think it is in Santiago del Tiede. He is not here. We will help the police but it makes no sense. We have had family and journalists here but we have seen no police."

Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared while attempting to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus. The night before he had been partying at the NRG music festival on the island with two pals.

But he disappearance and was last heard from on Monday last week. As the desperate search for the teenager enters its 11th day, the Civil Guard are are focussing their efforts to the north of the Masca Gorge.

Three separate ravines – including one where it is believed Jay's phone last 'pinged' shortly after he disappeared are also being searched.

Mountain rescue teams, local police, the Civil Guard and fire crews have been scouring the vast landscape, with sniffer dogs, drones and helicopters used in the search.

The Foreign Office is supporting his family. Jay's mum Debbie, dad Warren and brother Zak and other family members have flown out to Tenerife to support officers in the search.
