Next year, Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall will become the big man in charge of Doctor Who - and one key figure definitely approves of the promotion.

David Tennant - the Tenth Doctor and star of Chibnall's ITV crime drama - told Digital Spy that he thinks Chris was "possibly the only choice" to replace Steven Moffat as showrunner.

"I think it was an inevitability that the world would turn to Chris," said Tennant. "It's a big, massive, difficult job and it needs someone who is as enthusiastic and talented as Chris."

Of the post-Moffat era, he added: "It'll go from strength to strength. It's nice to know it's in safe hands, because it's such a prized property."

Moffat's final series will also be the last to feature current Who lead Peter Capaldi, with both writer and star departing the show this Christmas.

That means that one of Chibnall's first jobs as head writer and executive producer will be to cast a new Doctor. No pressure...

Doctor Who will return to BBC One on April 15, with new companion actress Pearl Mackie - as Bill - and Matt Lucas - playing Nardole - joining Capaldi for 12 new episodes.

David Tennant stars in Broadchurch, returning to ITV for its third and final series this Monday (February 27) at 9pm.
