Tesco store using 'nightclub-style door policy' and CCTV to tackle shoplifting

A Tesco branch in Southville, Bristol has taken to checking customers on CCTV before allowing them entry, in an attempt to curb a rising tide of shoplifting. The supermarket's automatic doors remain closed until potential patrons are screened via camera to identify any known or suspected thieves.

In addition, the store has removed baskets from the entrance to prevent shoplifters from filling them and making a quick escape. Staff have revealed that this "nightclub-style door policy" is enforced between 6am - 9am and during late evenings when no security personnel are present.

A Tesco spokesperson explained that all Tesco Express stores are equipped with a remote-control door access system which can be utilised during periods when thefts or assaults are more likely to occur. A representative for Avon and Somerset Police stated: "We take thefts from shops seriously and encourage store workers to report incidents, especially when threats or violence is used," reports Wales Online.

"There has been a nationwide increase in reported shoplifting offences and that is reflected across Avon and Somerset."

"Where repeat and prolific offenders have been identified, officers encourage shops to issue civil banning letters, which, if ignored, can provide evidence to enable action to be taken under Anti-Social Behaviour legislation."
