The BAFTAs are one of Britain’s most prestigious events with Hollywood stars taking to the red carpet in the hope of winning a much-coveted award.

One notable face may be missing from this year’s ceremony after a very public row. According to reports by The Sun, the Duchess of Cambridge may not be welcome as she could be a distraction from the other A-list guests.

Prince William, who is the president of the film academy, is planning to attend for the first time in two years but has reportedly been told that Kate could cause a problem.

BAFTA claims it has invited both the Duke and Duchess and that it’s “completely untrue” that William was asked to attend alone.

“Most people think William will end up getting his way by bringing Kate but it’s created awkwardness because her attendance shouldn’t have been in question,” a source told The Sun.

“[William] made it clear he wants to go this year and even bring Kate. It would be a real show of his commitment towards BAFTA and create headlines around the world.”

It’s no wonder the Prince wants to be seen. Recent criticisms have come his way after it was revealed that he has attended fewer public engagements than his father Charles did at the same age.

If the royal couple attend, this would be the Duchess’s first time at the BAFTAs which will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on February 12.

UPDATE: A BAFTA spokesperson has refuted the claims, telling Harper’s Bazaar: “For clarity – this is nonsense. As we confirmed last night it’s completely untrue that BAFTA has suggested that our President attend on his own. We would be delighted to welcome Their Royal Highnesses any year that they are able to attend.”
