The Great British Bake Off: Jaffa Cakes are cakes, people. CAKES!

It didn’t take long for the passions to rise higher than the sponges, as the age old question surfaces in the Technical Challenge.

Are Jaffa Cakes cakes or biscuits?

Clearly, the answer is in the name. And the fact they go hard when stale, as opposed to biscuits, which soften.

Don’t take my word for it. In 1991, HM Customs and Excise lost their case against McVities (trying to add VAT onto a staple food) because of that fact. So now we can have our Jaffa cakes and eat them, at a lower price, thanks to them NOT BEING BISCUITS.

Don’t even get me started on Paul Hollywood dunking …thank God Mary’s there to chastise.

“We don’t do that in the south, you know”

Elsewhere in the Marquee of Madness, a redheaded Eddie Redmayne, sorry, Andrew, is proving* popular with fans (Eddie Redmayne actually trended at one point - how privileged is that, he didn’t even need to do anything?) as is Val, close to going home last night and saved only by Lee failing to impress Mary and Paul. At least he got the celebrated Mel’n’Sue Sandwich™.

I totally fell for Val when Paul asked if he was disturbing her: “No, you’re not” she said when she really meant: “Yes, absolutely, dammit, s*d off”.

Impressive looking and tasting signature bakes from Benjamina, Candice, Selasi and Jane put them in the frame for this week’s Star Baker, although only Selasi truly impressed with the controversial Jaffa Cakes.

“Where d’you get the orange juice from?” - Mel

“The orange” - Candice

The show stoppers saw almost everyone having some sort of drama with their sponges or fillings, but Andrew, Jane, Selasi and Benjamina all produced simple, tasty bakes, while Candice went for opulence but failed with the Genoise. If they’d been asked for Cadbury Creme Egg cake, she might well have won.

Jane - the one who always looks close to tears - having not produced great Jaffa cakes, redeemed herself with a larger version which was definitely a cake and not a biscuit and, together with her impressive signature bake, saw her crowned Week One’s Star Baker.

In other news, retail outlets across the country are now reporting stocks of Jaffa Cakes at an all time low, following a rush just after 9pm last night.
