Based on Robert Jordan's epic fantasy novels, the story is set in a fictional land where magic is real and is mastered by women, namely a group of sorcerers named the Aes Sedai who work towards protecting the sanctity of the wheel by stopping the Dark One from returning.

The first season of The Wheel of Time follows Aes Sedai member Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) who is on a journey with her warder al'Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney) to find the Dragon Reborn.

Moiraine and the Aes Sedai believe that the Dragon Reborn will be able to face the Dark One, and the person is prophesied to have untold power that will either help them save the world or destroy it.

On her journey Moiraine comes to a village that is attacked by Trollocs, beasts who follow the Dark One, and there she comes across four young men and women who prove able fighters who have some form of connection to magic that could mean they are the Dragon Reborn.

Moiraine is injured in the battle whilst using the One Power, but she and Lan take villagers Egwenne (Madeleine Madden), Rand (Josha Stradowski), Perrin (Marcus Rutherford), and Mat (Barney Harris) with them to protect them and also draw the Trollocs away from their village. Their Wisdom Nynaeve (Zoë Robins) is captured by the creatures.

Along the way the group are met with formidable foes, including a whole Trolloc hoard, but Moiraine and Lan do everything in their power to protect the four people they suspect could be the Dragon Reborn, many of whom are coming into magic of their own including Rand.

In the world of The Wheel of Time men who have magical ability are usually subdued by the Aes Sedai because they go mad and their magic too often becomes chaotic and unpredictable, which can lead to untold misfortune to those around them but Rand appears to be different.

Nynaeve manages to escape her captors and finds her way to Lan and Moiraine after the villagers are scattered from each other by powerful magic, despite her anger over what happened to her friends Nynaeve agrees to help heal Moiraine though she only recovers enough for the journey to the Aes Sedai.

Meanwhile, the Aes Sedai have captured a man who claims to be the Dragon Reborn, Logain (Álvaro Morte), his power is much stronger than theirs and so the group imprison him and keep his powers at bay by continually channeling.

When Moiraine and the group arrive she is healed by the Aes Sedai and brought to Logain, the Aes Sedai plan to sever his connection to the One Power to rid him of his dangerous magic but when they attempt to do so everything goes wrong and Logain escapes.

Fighting off the Aes Sedai, Logain proves he is a terrifying adversary as he battles them fiercely and kills one of the women and slits the throat of Moiraine's warder Lan but he is healed by Nynaeve. Eventually the Aes Sedai are able to subdue Logain once more.

Moiraine, Lan and Naeneve search for Egwene, Rand, Mat and Perrin. Once they do, Moiraine implores them to travel with her to the Eye of the World to face the Dark One, and all but Mat go with her.

Along the way they fight more enemies and learn that whoever isn't the Dragon Reborn will die if they head into the Eye of the World with Moiraine, but after showing his powers the Aes Sedai realises that Rand is the Dragon Reborn and they continue the journey without the others.

Rand is confronted by the Dark One when they reach the Eye of the World and his enemy tries to tempt him by sharing visions of a world in which he and Egwene are happily married. Knowing this is not what Egwene wants despite his feelings for her, Rand resists and fights off the Dark One.

The powerful foe severs Moiraine's connection to the One Power in their battle, and though Rand is able to win the fight against the Dark One he decides to go into hiding for fear of his magic making him go mad. Lan finds Moiraine who informs him that they have more battles ahead of them.
