Theresa May reveals 'sadness' at not having children in rare display of public emotion

Theresa May has been criticised for her lack of personality during the General election campaign.

But the Prime Minister showed a more human side when she was quizzed about her not being able to have children in a personal interview she gave to LBC Radio.

The PM said being childless with husband Philip was “very sad”.

Asked about various current issues, Mrs May, 60, was also questioned about whether she would have been a different politician if she had children.

The Prime Minister responded: “I think it’s impossible to answer the question about how I would have been.

“It’s been very sad – it just turned out not to be possible for us. We’re not the only couple who find themselves in that situation.

“When you do, I suppose you just get on with life. We have nephews and nieces.”

She also revealed that she had been the subject of “fake news” – when a paper mistakenly said she was pregnant.

And in another personal note, Mrs May, an only child, said her husband had been her “rock” since losing her parents in her 20s.

The pair got married in 1980.

The Prime Minister, who has earned derision for her repetition of the “strong and stable” line also had to defend her government’s policy.

She was asked by one caller why she still backed Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt despite his unpopularity with NHS staff.

Mrs May said Hunt had done a “very good job”.
